DRIVE AGAINST DIABETES 2014 – COMBATTING DIABETES AT THE WORKPLACE

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in partnership with Apollo Sugar, One Touch J&J and Abbott are organizing a massive Drive Against Diabetes (DAD) 2014 on 14th November 2014 in conjunction with World Diabetes Day across Delhi NCR, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

The Industry recognizes the need to make health a boardroom agenda and with this intent, we began the Drive Against Diabetes in the city of Mumbai in 2013.

Exactly a year later, we are back with the second phase of this Drive Against Diabetes across 3 cities.

India plays host to one of the largest diabetic population in the world and according to the International Diabetes Federation IDF statistics, there are 100+ million diabetics & pre-diabetics in the country, and growing at an unprecedented rate.

Grim truths like, most cases of Diabetes being still undiagnosed, diabetes continues to remain one of the costliest diseases; however, this is preventable and most importantly easily controllable. This Drive is aimed at dispelling myths and promoting healthy diet and nutrition among the workforce population.

CII’s Member companies (BHEL, GAIL, ONGC, ICICI, J&J, Abbott, Reliance, Aptech, BCG, HDFC, Blue Star among others) will host camp stations at various corporate locations to screen and sensitize over 30,000 employees from the workforce community.

The private sector has stepped forward to provide screening kits and diagnostic support alongside training and capacity building for the paramedics. Key corporate partners included Apollo Sugar Clinics Ltd, Abbott, and One Touch J&J.

This is a corporate led initiative, and a first of its kind for its scale and reach.

BYTES:

SHOBANA KAMINENI, Chairperson CII National Committee on Public health & Executive Director – New Initiatives Apollo Hospitals Enterprise Limited.

CII Members and corporates have already come forward to conduct several of these screening camps engaging paramedics, and diebetologists across Delhi NCR, Mumbai and Hyderabad.’

CHANDRAJEET BANERJI, DIRECTOR GENERAL, CII

“This is an instance of mobilizing massive capacity and synchronous corporate action towards an increasing public health concern about NCDs. The Industry has once again come together for this Drive Against Diabetes (DAD) 2014 – the ambition is to create awareness of diabetes and not focus on numbers alone.”

Mr Gagan Bhalla, CEO, Apollo Sugar

“Apollo Sugar is happy to collaborate with CII in the mass screening campaign. We believe it is the moral responsibility of the corporate to ensure well-being of their employees and conducting such screenings is the first step. Studies show that the average person with diabetes in urban India spends approx. Rs. 30,000 per year on treatment. Unfortunately, the cost of late diagnosis of diabetes is likely to result in 10 to 18 times higher spending – these kinds of staggering numbers are a substantial financial drain and even a cause for indebtedness for families. Early diagnosis through screening for each and every individual hence, becomes important.”

Mr. Sushobhan Dasgupta, Managing Director – India, VP – Diabetes Care Asia Pacific, Johnson & Johnson Medical India

“Unfortunately we all live in the Diabetes Capital of the World and this Drive against Diabetes is a small collaborative step of getting like minded organizations come together and give back to the community we live in. We though have a long way to go and we at Johnson & Johnson India are extremely proud to be a part of this collaborative effort.”

Mr. Dilip Rajan, Country Head and General Manger Abbott Diabetes Care

“Screening remains the first step in overall diabetes management. Our primary objective was to create screening opportunities for the residents, and sensitize and create awareness about the importance of timely diagnosis and prevention. At Abbott Diabetes Care, we are committed to provide unwavering support to patients in their pursuit for good health and remain dedicated to tackling the growing challenge of Diabetes in India, We are proud to have partnered with CII in the ‘Drive against Diabetes’ on 14th November 2014 in conjunction with World Diabetes Day across Delhi NCR, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

“CII Agro Tech will help in attaining the objective of ‘more crop per drop’ laid out by our Hon’ble Prime Minister MrNarendra Modi by showcasing the best practices and most advanced procedures & technologies being applied in pockets to a vast number of farmers from all across India present at single platform”, highlighted Dr Goenka.

“Through CII Agro Tech, CII endeavours to support the Indian Agriculture Sector’s surge towards growth, where it seeks to be a stakeholder to the government’s vision of development, especially to improve India’s position world over inproductivity. At present, India lags behind other countries in productivity very badly. In 2012, our paddy productivity was only 3514 kg / hectare in comparison to a global average of 4397 / hectare where as China stands at 6661Kg /hectare. Similarly, for wheat, we stand at 3000 kg/hectare in comparison to a UK’s output of 7360 Kg / hectare. In Cotton, unfortunately India stands at 517 / hectare in comparison to a global average of 729 kg / hectare and Australia’s average of 1920 / hectare. CII would also try to convince the government in various policy initiatives, strengthen food supply chain and reforms as also to increase spending in R&D from a meager .6 %. Our Food processing industry stands at even lesser than 10 % while the global average is around 20-25 % with the same being even 90 % in some of the countries. The same model needs to be applied in India too”, he added.

“Via the fair, the aim is to create a platform of development which will help place India as a global player. This fair provides a critical platform to domestic farmers to imbibe global practices and develop a greater learning of the latest technological innovations being undertaken across international markets. Providing an important learning curve to Indian stakeholders, the fair will work closely with central and state governments to formulate policies which will help accelerate domestic agricultural production.”

“The fair will also feature key discussions on a reform agenda which will cover an entire gamut of agricultural activities focused on developing the sector from within. CII is of the opinion that technology and critical global partnerships will create a way forward for the industry and assist the Indian agri sector in its surge towards the next level of development”,he added.

Mr Rajesh Srivastava, Co Chairman, CII Agro Tech 2014 Conferences & Chairman & Managing Director, Rabo Equity Advisors commented, “We aim to bring focus back on farmers and provide them with a critical platform of greater learning. Services Exports Should Grow at Faster Pace to Offset Deficit in Merchandize Trade – Finance Minister

Mr. Arun Jaitley, Union Minister  for Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information and Broadcasting  has said that the services exports from the country should grow faster to  offset  the deficit in the merchandize  trade.

While inaugurating the  Services Conclave 2014 today in New Delhi, the Finance Minister said that within the services sector “ we should focus on low lying fruits like tourism, research & development  education etc., where it is easier and quicker  to achieve results,” he added.

(L-R) Shri Arun Jaitley, Minister of Finance, Corporate Affairs and Information & Broadcasting and Mr Ajay S. Shriram, President, Confederation of Indian Industry at the Inaugural Session of the Services Conclave 2014

The Conclave is the joint initiative of  the Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry and CII. Over 250 stakeholders from various segments of services sector are attending the two-day event.

Mr Jaitley said that the services sector contributing close to 60 per cent of the GDP  could  be the driving force not only for exports but for generation of gainful employment. In this regard, he said that the manufacturing sector has shrunk its contribution to GDP to 15 per cent.  “Our effort is to increase its share  to 25 per cent to provide sustainable employment to the people,” he added.

Referring to the WTO negotiations which are at a standstill, the Finance Minister underscored that the definition of globalization has changed over the years.  “It is now consumer driven and no amount of patriotism and jingoism can drive the consumers to buy products.   They go for quality and price competitiveness”, he added.  The positions taken by various developed countries against Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in the case of IT and IT enabled services (ITeS) has fallen flat because the consumers wanted to have best products at affordable prices, he added.

“Make in India” campaign was evolved to make the Indian products more competitive in terms of quality and price, Mr Jaitley added. There are many issues that have to be addressed, such as labour reforms, facilitating capital flows,  strengthening of infrastructure  and trade facilitation measures.  He assured that the Government would address these issues in right earnest to enable different segments of industry to grow faster.

Mr Jaitley said that a few areas of services sector had to be identified and capabilities built around  them  to seize the emerging opportunities.  In this regard, he said that India could  emerge as a regional educational hub.  This not only would reverse the trend of Indian students going abroad for higher studies but also could attract students from developing countries to come to India. For this, the quality of education should be considerably enhanced and the objective should be to catch up with the best education institutions in the world.

The Finance Minister also referred to the huge potential India has in the health sector for attracting patients from other countries, who could undergo complex treatments at very affordable prices.  A competitive environment was important to upgrade the skills and expertise, he added.

Ms Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, said that the services sector in India had grown without much support from the Government. Some of the sectors like IT and ITeS, films, entertainment, professional service etc. had become world class.  The changes brought about in these segments were driven by the industry itself.  She wanted this trend to continue since there was a huge untapped potential in various segments of services sector, be it services for domestic consumption or exports.  The two day conclave, she hoped , could map the potential and identify strategies to tap them on a sustainable basis.

Mr Rajeev Kher, Union Commerce Secretary, said that India’s share in the world services exports was only 3 per cent as compared to EU’s share of 42 per cent and China’s 4 per cent.  “It is a huge challenge for us to increase our  share to the global services trade.  For this, all stakeholders should come together. Quality of services whether it is for domestic consumption or for exports should considerably go up.  The success of IT and ITeS should inspire us to aim high to reach higher orbit of growth in other sectors as well,” he said.

Mr Kher said that Department of Commerce would act as an anchor for permeating Rule based exports. Other ministries and organizations are also involved in the exercise. This would help achieve Indian exporters to penetrate into markets more aggressively.

Mr Ajay Shriram, President, CII, said that a reform agenda was imperative for enhancing the services exports for the country.  In this regard, skill development and laying of physical and digital infrastructure were important.  Services Trade Agreements both bilateral and multilateral also could help the services sector exports to grow faster.   He wanted earliest    signing of Totalization agreements with countries, where there are a large number of Indians working.

Mr Malvinder Mohan Singh, Chairman, CII Services Council, said that the services sector should grow faster from the present level of 9 per cent per annum to enable India to achieve 10 per cent growth in GDP in a given timeframe.  At this rate, the share of services sector to GDP would increase to 65 per cent.  Referring to the health sector, he cited the example of Singapore where it was empirically proved that one dollar investment would have a significant multiplier effect  on the community.  He underscored the need for creating a strong IT backbone  and a  regulatory mechanism.

Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director General, CII, has referred to the initiatives of CII  in skilling people, particularly in the health sector.  This, he hoped, would plug the skill gap in the country.
